Gumdo Art - Dueling

In Haedong Gumdo, we do not have free-style dueling (fighting) like Japanese Kendo but we do have many pre-defined duelings.
For this reason, Haedong Gumdo does not need heavy equipment like Bogu (armor for dueling) in Japanese Kendo.

The reason why we do not practice free style dueling is because Haedong Gumdo is really practical and does not want limitation of skills designed for match.

One-handed style dueling
In one-hande style duelings, we normally use bamboo swords for the practice for the safety reason.

Students who finished Ssangsoo Gumbup and Shimsang Gumbup start to learn this one-handed style duelings. The beginner's level of this one-handed style pre-defined dueling mostly consists of one-versus-one dueling.

Two-handed style dueling
Either bamboo sword (Juk do)or wooden sword (Mokum) can be used for the two-handed style pre-defined dueling as this is not beginner's level.
In order to learn this style of pre-defined dueling, you have to finish Ssangsoo Gumbup, Shimsang Gumbup, Yedo Gumbup and Sunbang Gumbup number 1 to 10.

Beginning part (number 1 to 5) of this pre-defined dueling is one-versus-one style and intermediate part (number 6 to 10) is mainly focused on one-versus-many style duelings.
Advanced styles have more difficult and various techniques of dueling.
However, before you start to learn the numbers of dueling, you learn and practice lots of single dueling techniques first.
